Getting kitty the right cat bed is sometimes not as easy as it seems. I have a lot of cats and have found that each one has their own unique taste. In food, toys, blankets and cat beds. But there are several tips I have picked up over the years that makes it easier to find just the right one.
Notice your cats sleeping habits. Do they curl up in a ball while they nap? A circular cat bed is perfect for these types. It conforms to the same shape they are sleeping in, but the sides give them a sense of security and warmth. Some of my cats like to stretch out and roll over or lie flat on their backs. Obviously, they need a larger bed to accommodate their laid back style. I still recommend the bed having sides, though, for the same reasons as the circular ones. And another thing about having sides is that they love to rest their chins there. They also have beds with a half dome across the top that are wonderful too. It gives your cat some privacy but they don’t feel trapped. We all know how leery some cats are about feeling confined, so these beds give them that safe escape route. On the other hand, some of my kitties like a smaller, more confined bed. The cube shaped ones, with an entrance or two, are quite popular. I think they feel like they are hiding and cats love to be sneaky like that! Just observing how they sleep should help you decide which one is best for them.
The next thing to consider is where to put the bed. Where does your cat hang out? What room is their favorite in the house? I have put them tucked away in corners, in the kitchen or the bedroom. Anyplace your cat feels safe and comfy is where he will like his bed placed. Cats spend approximately 15 hours a day sleeping, so we want their beds to be perfect for them. Some of my cats sleep with me at night, but some actually prefer their beds to mine...insulting, I know! During the day they can usually be found napping peacefully in whichever bed they have claimed as their own.
Heated cat beds are fabulous. Some of my older cats are getting a bit arthritic and the heated beds are so great for them. They climb out much more limber than when they went in. We all know how comforting heat is and they truly benefit from it. Also, if you have a sick kitty or one recovering from surgery, the heated cat beds are so therapeutic. If you live in a cold climate, they need the heated bed just like we need our electric blankets. I live in the South and still find they love these beds. With the air conditioner blasting away, they don’t know that it’s 90 degrees outside. They are cool inside and love to climb in and get warm.
So, by observing your cats habits and special needs, you can easily pick out the perfect cat bed for them. No more wasting money on ones they sniff over and turn their noses up at!
